Post Operative Instructions
TEMPORARY CROWNS OR BRIDGES
- The temporary cement is temporary and the crown is made of plastic and can break. Please refrain from hard, sticky foods as it may pull the temporary out.
- If the temporary does come out or break, please call us. If you are unable to get to the office, the use of a denture adhesive will hold it in place. Remember that the temporary is holding the space for your crown and is important that it stay in or the teeth may shift, causing the permanent crown to improperly fit or not at all.
- Be careful while flossing, please pull the floss through and not up, the temporary may come up with the floss.
- Your tooth may be sensitive, that is common. If you are in pain, call us.
CROWNS
- When a tooth has a cavity that takes up more than 60% of a tooth, a crown is required to maintain function of that tooth. The crown covers the entire tooth, holding it together.
- After the final cementation of your crown, it may take a few days to get used to.
- Hot and cold sensitivity are normal for a few weeks, if there is pain, please call us.
- If your bite does not feel balanced, please call us for a quick adjustment.
- With proper brushing and flossing as you would your natural teeth, these restorations will maintain their function.
- Seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and exams will help detect any problems in their early stages, preventing extensive appointments.
SCALING AND ROOT PLANING
- Sensitivity may occur, this is common, try using a warm salt water rinse, sensitivity toothpaste or fluoride rinse.
- If there is discomfort, take Advil or Tylenol, it is a good idea to take something before the anesthetic wears off. If you are in excessive pain or bleeding, please call the office.
- You have taken the steps necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy, continue this care at home as well. Remember to brush and floss, keeping the teeth and gums clean is most important.
DENTURE
- You may experience some soreness as you are getting use to the denture for the first few days.
- Your denture should be treated as though they are real teeth. Brush them everyday.
- As the dentures are not real teeth, remember to take them out every night and soak them in water or cleaning solution. The cleaning solution does not remove debris from the denture, it does need to be brushed after soaking in the solution. Removing the denture allows your gums to breathe and reduces the risk of gum infection.
- Getting us to a denture is work, practice will help. Speech and chewing may be briefly altered as you tongue and mouth become accustomed to the denture.
ROOT CANAL THERAPY
- It is normal to be uncomfortable after the treatment.
- A temporary filling material has been placed in the tooth until an appointment for a crown has been made.
- This filling is made of plastic material and is not strong. Be careful and avoid foods that are hard and/or sticky. This may break the filling or pull it out. If this does happen, please call us, as it may create sensitivity.
- As always, continue to brush and floss. Pulling the floss through instead of up, will avoid popping the filling out.
- To avoid any damage to the tooth, keep your appointments, as the tooth structure has been weakened and needs the crown to maintain function.
- If you experience any pain or concerns, call us.
VENEERS
- A temporary veneer has been placed until the permanent veneer is in. The permanent veneers will be smoother and resemble the teeth much nicer.
- As with any temporary, use special care as they are plastic. They will break and chip. Do not brush them hard, be gentle.
- If the temporaries come off, please call us. Having them off may create sensitivity in your teeth.
- If your bite feels uneven, call us for an adjustment.
- For the permanent veneers, they should feel more natural and function as your natural teeth do. They are cemented with permanent cement and are meant to last years. Maintain them as you would your natural teeth, brush and floss daily.
COMPOSITE / TOOTH COLORED FILLINGS
- It is normal to feel some sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure after your filling is placed. You may also have some soreness in your gums for several days. A warm salt water rinse should help soothe it.
- The filling material is a plastic material that is hardened with a special light, which enables you to eat and drink as usual. As always, let the anesthetic wear off before eating or drinking.
- If your bite feels uneven or you find yourself grinding on the tooth, call us and we can adjust the filling.
- Your fillings should function as do your natural teeth, eat and drink as usual.
- Remember to maintain your fillings as you would your natural teeth, brush and floss daily and continue to see your dentist regularly.
